The Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata), also known as the snow monkey, is a terrestrial Old World monkey species that is native to Japan. Colloquially, they are referred to as "snow monkeys" because some live in areas where snow covers the ground for months each year – no other non-human primate lives farther north, nor in a colder climate. [ 3 ]
The park is inhabited by Japanese Macaques, which are also known as Snow Monkeys. It is located in the monkey's natural habitat, in the forests of the Jigokudani valley in Yamanouchi, not far from the onsen towns of Shibu and Yudanaka.
It is famous for its large population of wild Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata), more commonly referred to as snow monkeys, that go to the valley during the winter, foraging elsewhere in the national park during the warmer months.

Jigokudani Yaen-Koen (Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park), nestled in the Yokoyu River Valley in the northern reaches of Nagano Prefecture, is home to wild troops of Japanese macaques. The valley is located at an elevation of 850 meters and is surrounded by deciduous forests.
