Reuben or Reuven (Hebrew: רְאוּבֵן, Standard Rəʾūven, Tiberian Rŭʾūḇēn) [4] was the first of the six sons of Jacob and Leah (Jacob's oldest son), according to the Book of Genesis. He was the founder of the Israelite Tribe of Reuben.

This name reflects Leah's hope and joy at bearing Jacob's first son, as well as her desire for Jacob's affection. Reuben's position as the firstborn traditionally entailed a special status, including leadership and a double portion of inheritance.

Reuben was the first of six sons born to Jacob by his first (but not favorite) wife, Leah.1 Although he was the eldest of Jacob’s 12 sons (progenitors of the 12 Tribes), throughout his life he seemed to fail to actualize his potential to lead his brothers.
