19 paź 2017 · Weightlifting was on the programme of the Games of the I Olympiad in Athens in 1896, (included in the gymnastics programme). The sport was not staged at the Games in Paris in 1900, but was re-included for the Games in St Louis in 1904 (in the athletics programme), then disappeared again in 1908 and 1912.

It was included in the inaugural edition in 1896 at Athens, Greece as part of the field events in track and field athletics. The 1896 Olympics had two weightlifting events – lifting with one hand and lifting with two hands.
In 1920, weightlifting returned to the Olympics and, for the first time, as an event in its own right – and weightlifting has been contested at every (summer) Olympics Games since. The 1920 Games took place at Antwerp in Belgium; and fourteen nations competed.
Weightlifting has ancient origins. It was practised both by ancient Egyptian and Greek societies. It developed as an international sport primarily in the 19th century, and is one of the few sports to have featured at the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896.

9 kwi 2018 · The early history of Olympic Weightlifting had left much to be desired. The 1896 and 1904 games had used entirely different lifts, no weight classes of note and were unsure about what they were actually testing. To survive as an Olympic sport, changes needed to be made.
