Gatherer is an addon that tracks the closest plants, deposits and treasure locations on your minimap. It remembers where you have gathered items in the past and shows them on your map when they come into range.
I play on two realms. On my PVE realm, it's not worth it to farm mineral nodes, because the bots put stuff on the AH for so cheap. On my PVP realm, it's worth using gatherer - but you still run the risk of having your node ninjamined by someone out of phase, or being attacked for the node.
