French Texans. The story of French in Texas starts in 1685 when René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, mistakenly established a French colony in Texas while searching for the mouth of the Mississippi River by sea. The colony was named Fort Saint Louis, but it soon reached a tragic end.
The French presence in Texas began more than three centuries ago, and that migration has continued ever since. But unlike German migration to the area, the French presence in Texas has been nearly invisible, so small that it takes a “Frog” to notice it.
In this section, I will post pictures of interviews of French-Texan immigrants from the French in Texas Oral History Collection conducted by François Lagarde. I aim to provide context for French-Texan perspectives on culture and provide insight on their thoughts on their identity.
