FIELD NOTES AND OTHER DATA. Virtually all research involves documents, and most of these can be analyzed qualitatively. Although the focus in this book has been on primary documents, this chapter examines how to use many of these principles to work with secondary documents, including interviews, field notes from observations, and records.
Field research* is the systematic study, primarily through long-term, face-to-face interactions and observations, of everyday life. A primary goal of field research is to understand daily life from the perspectives of people in a setting or social group of interest to the researcher.
