And so faith, hope, love abide [faith—conviction and belief respecting man’s relation to God and divine things; hope—joyful and confident expectation of eternal salvation; love—true affection for God and man, growing out of God’s love for and in us], these three; but the greatest of these is love.
13 But for right now, until that completeness, we have three things to do to lead us toward that consummation: Trust steadily in God, hope unswervingly, love extravagantly. And the best of the three is love. 13 But now abideth faith, hope, love, these three; and the greatest of these is love.
It will abide, in a sense, even after our faith has become sight and our hope in eternity has been fully realized. Paul's bottom line in this chapter is that, of course, faith and hope are far more important than spiritual gifts and love is greater even than faith and hope.
