  5. Emotion-focused therapies, including EFTT, integrate seminal developments in emotion theory and research and affective neuroscience that emphasize emo-tion as an adaptive orienting system (e.g., Damasio, 1999, 2010; Frijda, 2016; Izard, 1977, 2002; LeDoux, 2012).

Emotion-focused therapy (EFT) aims to help clients enhance their emotional processing, which we define as approaching, accepting, tolerating, symbolizing, making narrative sense of, and utilizing or transforming emo-tions. This increases people’s ability to respond adaptively to situations as they arise.

  7. In this chapter, we describe the core assumptions and values of emotion-focused therapy, EFT emotion theory and practice principles, and some of the main kinds of therapeutic work in EFT (‘markers and tasks’). We conclude with a summary of EFT emotion change principles and a brief case example.
