Although it's true that many of us didn't notice the X or Square = Remove at the bottom of the memorize spells screen... that is NOT the issue. The issue, more precisely, is that for EVERY OTHER item in the game, you have to click on the item to equip/unequip.

On PlayStation when in the memorize spell menu, It’s push square to remove a spell. I’m not sure what you are playing on but if you mean just clearing it when you are memorizing them just hit square on PlayStation or X on Xbox. That should empty the slot you are hovering over. On pc I have no clue sorry.

It's not particularly intuitive, the developers didn't make it easy to see--so hope this helps! They are removed at a grace point under the memorize spells menu. Highlight the incantation that's already in the memory slot and press square to remove on playstation. I'm on ps4 you just press square.
