DTP is normally used on Cisco IOS switches to negotiate if the interface should become an access port or trunk. By default, DTP is enabled, and the interfaces of your switches will be in “dynamic auto” or “dynamic desirable” mode.

Following commands sets can be used to configure different Dynamic Trunking Protocol (DTP) modes for Switch interface. Refer folowing lessons if you are not familiar with Dynamic Trunking Protocol (DTP). • Dynamic Trunking Protocol (DTP) • Difference Between DTP "dynamic desirable" and "dynamic auto" Modes.
DTP, Dynamic Trunking Protocol, is a trunking protocol that is developed and proprietary to Cisco which is used to automatically negotiate trunks between Cisco switches. Trunk negotiations are managed by DTP only if the port is directly connected to each other.
DTP is a Cisco proprietary protocol that is automatically enabled on Catalyst 2960 and Catalyst 3560 Series switches. Switches from other vendors do not support DTP. DTP manages trunk negotiation only if the port on the neighbor switch is configured in a trunk mode that supports DTP.
Port can be configured in one of the below states: Dynamic auto – passive mode, allow to form “Trunk” state if second end is actively negotiating; Dynamic desirable – active mode, allow to form “Trunk”; Trunk – put interface in permanent “Trunk” mode; Access – DTP protocol is desirably in off state.
