Dragon Caves are underground structures that house one level 4 or 5 dragon. Dragon caves are the only natural spawning place of wild stage 4 and 5 dragons, of which the females drop Dragon Eggs. As of yet, there is no reliable way of locating a dragon cave in survival.
Ice caves are 636 (probably more/less) from fire caves, depending on where the glacier biome/ice plains are. In the middle of a dragon roost, at least at height 66 or more/less, dragon caves can be found 30 blocks below and 50-60 outward from a roost from what I've seen.

Lil late to the party...but I use the digital miner from mek, set it to find blocks from the ice and fire mod - drop on the surface of dragon biomes, in the other dimension, and it will scan if there are any nests in an 32x32 surface to bedrock block radius
The dragon caves are designed to generate randomly. Sometimes they connect to a cave, sometimes they don't. They aren't limited to Extreme Hills and Ice Plains/Spikes biomes. Ice dragons will spawn in cold snowy biomes (if you see snow villagers, it should be cold enough). Fire dragons will spawn in any other biomes.
