Your Dragon Age save files need to be in the same Bioware folder (…/Documents/Bioware) where your Dragon Age 2 folders are located. This is the location of your personal folders, not the game folders in Program Files. If both DAO and DA2 are not both in that folder location, you can trick it.

If you imported you DA:O save into DA:A, the Awakening save counts as a Dragon Age Origins and as a Dragon Age Awakening save file at the same time. Basically importing the awakening one also would import all the information regarding Origins and so on.
