11 gru 2023 · This year we set up a tip-line for members of the public to report illegal dog and cat meat trading activities. These tips are taken to the authorities, and as a direct result slaughterhouses and restaurants shut down, and illegal trucks crammed with hundreds of dogs intercepted.
The dog and cat meat trade across Asia subjects millions of animals to suffering, and while rescue efforts are crucial, they alone cannot end this cruel industry. However, wherever possible, we partner with local organizations to save the lives of animals trapped in the trade.
Ending the trade in China is a realistic goal, although progress has been slow. Notably, in 2020, the Chinese cities of Shenzhen and Zhuhai implemented bans on dog and cat meat consumption, and China’s Ministry of Agriculture officially reclassified dogs as companion animals rather than livestock.
It is clear that the dogs and cats in the trade serve as a significant reservoir for the emergence and spread of zoonotic pathogens, including viruses due to their treatment.
