1 wrz 2024 · Deck department ratings are the unsung heroes of maritime operations. Without them, the officers’ plans and strategies would remain just that—plans and strategies. It is the ratings who bring these plans to life, handling the day-to-day tasks that ensure the ship runs smoothly.
A term used to describe skilled seafarers with support roles to navigation, maintenance, security and other shipboard operations. They are the ones doing the actual work assigned to them by ship’s officers. Each deck ratings have set of skills that needs to match with the type of ship they are in.
The boatswain is the highest rankings unlicensed (rating) in the deck department. The boatswain generally carries out the tasks instructed by the chief mate, directing the able seamen and ordinary seamen.
The deck department is divided into deck officers and ratings. All ranks in the deck department are required to have undertaken training in accordance with the STCW Convention, for fleets of those countries who have ratified it. [1]
Deck ratings assists with tasks such as mooring and anchoring the ship, cleaning and maintaining the decks, and performing routine maintenance on the ship's equipment. They work under the supervision of the officers of the deck department.
Deck officers maintain watches on the bridge at sea and about the ship in port. They are responsible for passage planning, safe navigation of the vessel, cargo loading and discharge, ship stability, communications and maintenance of the hull and deck equipment.
