In the Linux coding standard, not only do they keep the 80 character limit, but they also use 8 space indentation. Part of the reasoning is that if you ever reach the right margin, you should consider moving an indentation level into a separate function.
There are several reasons to still adhere to an 80 character limit (or, a 74 character limit is even better; it allows for the code to remain fewer than 80 columns even when diff markers and email quoting is added, if you do code review on mailing lists).

24 paź 2022 · A limit of 80 characters helps to write scannable code. I've heard this style of embracing short lines called vertical coding . Code that is 80 characters wide encourages simpler statements, smaller functions, and lower cyclomatic complexity.
I find it dissatisfying and frustrating when one of those source files is >120 characters in width, because it means I can't comfortably fit a line of code on a line of screen. It upsets formatting to line wrap.
