Buda Castle was the last major stronghold of Budapest held by Axis forces during the siege of Budapest between 29 December 1944 and 13 February 1945. The German and Hungarian forces defending the castle attempted to break the Soviet blockade on 11 February 1945, but failed.

Life on the Castle Hill began in the 13th century, after the Tatars and Mongols decimated the flat Pest side and the survivors recognized the strategic benefit of the hilltop across the Danube River.
Castle Hill is densely packed with historic sites and opportunities for panoramic views. The Funicular is the easiest way to get to Buda, but the walk up the side of Castle Hill is the most scenic way as you walk through a park like setting with views of the Danube and the city of Pest below.
