Black Americans are incarcerated in state prisons at nearly 5 times the rate of white Americans. Nationally, one in 81 Black adults in the U.S. is serving time in state prison. Wisconsin leads the nation in Black imprisonment rates; one of every 36 Black Wisconsinites is in prison.
According to “One in Five: Ending Racial Inequity in Incarceration,” the imprisonment rate of Black men in 2021 declined substantially, falling by almost half (48%) since 2000, yet Black men were still imprisoned at 5.5 times the rate of white men.
One in five Black men born in 2001 is likely to experience imprisonment within their lifetime, a decline from one in three for those born in 1981. Pushback from policymakers threatens further progress in reducing racial inequity in incarceration. Related to: Racial Justice, Incarceration.
Put plainly, Black people are in prison for longer than white peers and the disparity is growing. This is especially the case with respect to sentences for violent convictions, according to the report. The Marshall Project’s Weihua Li took a close look at this finding.
