Dan (Hebrew: דן) is an ancient city mentioned in the Hebrew Bible, described as the northernmost city of the Kingdom of Israel, [1] and belonging to the tribe of Dan, its namesake. It was later the site of a royal sanctuary built by Jeroboam.

The mound of the biblical city of Dan is located at the foot of Mount Hermon in the northeast of the country. The fertility of the area around Dan is mentioned in the Bible: For we have seen the Land, and behold, it is very good. (Judges 18:9) The site extends over an area of 200 dunams (50 acres).

Kings Omri (882 BC) and Ahab (855-850) reinforced the northern cities, such as Hazor which was doubled in size and new walls were added.
DAN (CITY) (Heb. דָּנ׃֙), a city of the northern extremity of ancient Israel, situated on the S base of Mount Hermon close to one of the tributaries of the Jordan River, the Nahr Leddan.
