I prefer to work at 600 DPI, which means my canvas is around 6000px for most projects. This size is high but not high enough to toast my poor old pc. It also lets me make good quality prints at poster size. I've seen some digital artists who consistently work at 1200 DPI (i.e. around 24k pixels).
