Bagdad (arab. بغداد [b ɐ ʁ ˈ d̪ ɑ ː d̪]) – stolica Iraku; liczba mieszkańców wynosi ponad 7 mln. Położony nad Tygrysem jest jednym z największych miast na Bliskim Wschodzie.
Situated on the Tigris, it is part of the Baghdad Governorate and is located near the Diyala River. With a population variously estimated at 6 or over 7 million, Baghdad forms 22% of Iraq's total population. In comparison to its large population, the city has a small area at just 673 square kilometers (260 sq mi).
Baghdad was the center of the Caliphate during the Islamic Golden Age of the 9th and 10th centuries, growing to be the largest city worldwide by the beginning of the 10th century. It began to decline in the Iranian Intermezzo of the 9th to 11th centuries and was destroyed in the Mongolian invasion in 1258.
