All the antibiotics used in periodontal therapy, inhibit growth of the major periodontal pathogens P. gingivalis, C. rectus and Capnocytophaga. In direct contrast, none are particularly effective in the inhibition of E. corrodens (minocycline and doxycycline being best).
An ideal antibiotic for use in prevention and treatment of periodontal disease should be specific for periodontal pathogens, allogenic and nontoxic, substantive, not in general use for treatment of other diseases, and inexpensive.

Evidence synthesis: Adjunctive systemic antimicrobials have been evaluated both in aggressive and chronic periodontitis: in aggressive periodontitis, amoxicillin and metronidazole have been extensively studied, reporting clinical and microbiological benefits; in chronic periodontitis, different products are under scrutiny, such as azithromycin.
