This revised clinical practice guideline (CPG) addresses the distinct but related lower extremity impairments of those with a first-time lateral ankle sprain (LAS) and those with chronic ankle instability (CAI). Depending on many factors, impairments may continue following injury.
Mechanism of injury: Lateral ankle sprains usually occur when the foot rolls underneath the ankle or leg, also known as an inversion injury. Symptoms: Patients will complain of pain on the outside of their ankle, swelling, bruising and difficulty bearing weight on the foot.
