Acute hemorrhagic diarrhea syndrome in dogs is characterized by both acute vomiting and diarrhea. The diagnosis is based on clinical signs and a PCV >60%. Prompt IV fluid therapy is the main treatment. Parenteral antibiotics may also be helpful, especially if there is sepsis or neutropenia.

Acute hemorrhagic diarrhea syndrome (AHDS) is a new name proposed to describe the syndrome known for decades as hemorrhagic gastroenteritis (HGE). The new name defines the disease better since studies out of Germany have demonstrated that affected dogs do not display any gastric inflammation.
Numerous causes for acute hemorrhagic diarrhea (AHD) exist and hemorrhagic diarrhea is not a diagnosis per se, because it only reflects the severity of intestinal mucosal damage. The two most important causes of AHD are canine parvovirus infection and acute hemorrhagic diarrhea syndrome (AHDS).
Acute hemorrhagic diarrhea syndrome is defined as sudden onset of severe bloody diarrhea frequently associated with vomiting, which results in severe, sometimes life-threatening dehydration.
