When used properly, acetaminophen is a safe, effective analgesic and antipyretic. However, acetaminophen toxicity can lead to hepatotoxicity, liver failure, and death. Critical care nurses play an important role in decreasing morbidity and mortality in these patients.
7 maj 2024 · Acetaminophen poisoning is among the most common causes of medication-related poisoning and death. It may occur following an acute ingestion or through repeated ingestions of supratherapeutic amounts.
Mild poisoning may not cause symptoms, and when present, symptoms of acute acetaminophen poisoning are usually minor until ≥ 48 hours after ingestion. Symptoms, which occur in 4 stages (see table ), include anorexia, nausea, vomiting, and right upper quadrant abdominal pain.

9 cze 2023 · The recommended dose of acetaminophen for adults is 650 mg to 1000 mg every 4 to 6 hours, not to exceed 4 grams/day. In children, the dose is 15 mg/kg every 6 hours, up to 60 mg/kg/day. Toxicity develops at 7.5 g/day to 10 g/day or 140 mg/kg.
