3G networks rely on older, less efficient technology. Mobile providers are switching off the 3G networks to make room for the more advanced 4G and 5G networks. 4G and 5G give customers better, faster and more reliable services.
If you are still using a 3G device, you will no longer have any mobile data service access now that 3G has been switched off. This means you will no longer be able to access the internet or messaging apps such as WhatsApp. You will still be able to make and receive calls and texts on our 2G network.
All the main four networks, Vodafone, EE, Three, and O2 are phasing out 3G to make way for more efficient 4G and 5G signals. Learn when the switch off will happen, how it affects older handsets, and why it’s essential to check if your phone supports 4G or 5G.
Once our 3G network is switched off in 2025, to continue to make and receive calls, send and receive texts, and use data without a Wi-Fi connection, you’ll need to connect to our 4G network (which has 99% coverage across the UK) or our 5G network. To do this, you’ll need a compatible 4G or 5G phone.
