Current banknotes. There are four denominations (values) of Bank of England notes in circulation: £5, £10, £20 and £50. They all feature either the portrait of King Charles III or of Her late Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.

The obverse of these banknotes issued through 4 June 2024 feature the portrait of Elizabeth II originally introduced in 1990.
The Bank of England now has a monopoly of note issue in England and Wales, but this has not always been the case. Until the middle of the 19th century, private banks in Great Britain and Ireland were free to issue their own banknotes, and notes issued by provincial banking companies were commonly in circulation.
