Wolves are mammals of the dog family, Canidae. The members of that family are called canids or canines. The family also includes coyotes, foxes, jackals, and domestic dogs. Only two species are recognized as true wolves today—the gray, or timber, wolf (Canis lupus) and the Ethiopian wolf (C. simensis).
