2 mar 2013 · One great example for pistol loaders is Winchester W231 and Hodgdon HP-38 (the same powder branded differently). I have used this powder for many different cartridges and load levels- it meters great, is super-versatile, and is a great bulk-buy in 8 lb canisters.
Winchester 231 is a ball powder, one of the most popular handgun propellants in history. It is ideally suited to 38 Special, 45 Auto, and 9mm standard loads. Consistency, clean burning, low flash, and a broad range of applications make this powder a choice for any handgun cartridge loader.
15 wrz 2017 · For range and "target" shooting look for 135-148-158 grain loads in the 750-850 fps range. But if you're using 231 just load .38 Spl cases and use .38 Spl load data. 3.5 grains behind a 158 grain projectile makes a nice range load pleasant to shoot and accurate.
26 lis 2021 · An additional source of load data is Hornady's Reloading Data Center. Their load for 231 in 357 cases (148 Hornady LHBWC bullet) is between a low of 3.0 grains, and a high of 3.4. Link to site: https://www.hodgdonreloading.com/reloading-data-center?rdc=true&type=53.
18 paź 2024 · WW231 and 357 Mag with 158 gr LSWC. I’ve used in the past and will soon load more, a 357 Magnum mid range load using 6.0 grs WW231 under 158 gr cast SWC. This load was based on 1997 Winchester load data for 158 gr lead bullet using WW231 powder (a low of 6.2 grs to max, if I recall, of 6.7 grs).
Hodgdon's current load data lists a Max charge of W231 under a 158gr SWC as 5.0gr in a .357 Magnum. The pressure they report is not even a hot standard pressure .38 Special load. Older sources list a charge range of 6.0gr to 6.7gr W231 under a 158gr SWC.
