Management is the science and art of getting people together to accomplish desired goals and objectives by coordinating and integrating all available resources efficiently and effectively.
Lussier (2021) defines a manager as “the individual responsible for achieving organizational objectives through efficient and effective utilization of resources” (p. 3). The problem with this definition is that it implies that a manager has to be both efficient and effective, which eliminates the possibility of having a bad manager.
What is distinctive about management, as opposed to other areas of applied social science? Why manage-ment rather than business? In this chapter, I intend to draw the boundaries of the discussion: management research specifically, rather than the wider field of business as a whole.
Management is about putting together organizations that work to accomplish a mission. The basic tasks of the manager are to plan and to execute. The manager assesses the organization's goals and resources. He defines these clearly for others. The manager formulates a plan of action or a kind of road map.
