A VHS tape has a resolution 300x360 pixels NTCS (I dont know for the PAL if you know please tell me) so if you capture it in 720 x 576 it does not make much sense, and from I figured a resolution of 480x576 SVCD. or even 352x288 VCD but in hi bitrates (such as 3000 kbs or 4000 kps) should work fine. In my research I did run into this guide, however when I followed the steps to change aspect ratio using. Code: ffmpeg -i test.avi -vf scale=640x480,setsar=1:1 sq_output.mp4. the output is way overcompressed, and ffmpeg didn't seem to like it when I tried to do it losslessly or I was messing something up.
11 wrz 2005 · I captured one at 352 and the other at 640 and the 640 seems to look better when burned to DVD with WinDVD Creator2. 640 is not in the dvd specs. It would have been resized to 352 or more likely 720. 352, 704, and 720 are the main acceptable dvd specs. halfd1 352x480 is probably more than acceptable for most cases.
United States. 640x480 or 720x480, it's usually a setting in the capture software. The VHS tape is analog, it doesn't have a digital resolution. The 480 corresponds to the NTSC scan lines of 525. (after cropping), while the 720 is the sampling of each line (far beyond any detail that VHS was capable of)

Widescreen VHS tapes were created by letterboxing the image, which means that black bars are added to the top and bottom of the image to make it fit the widescreen aspect ratio. Because of this, the resolution of widescreen VHS tapes is the same as standard VHS tapes, with the added black bars reducing the overall screen size.
11 cze 2012 · I'm shooting VHS and will capture, probably on PC. At some point in the chain the project will end up an HD resolution, probably 1080P. I read somewhere rather than capture at SD and then use software (e.g. MPGStreamclip) to uprez the SD files, I should capture and uprez simultaneously. Apparently Matrox MX02 Mini might be a good solution ...
I'm using Power Directorto capture PAL 4:3 VHS tapes as MPEG-4 as cyberlink recommended those settings. A Tape just over 2 hrs will be create a 6gb mp4 which is of course to big to fit on a standard DVD. I then use dvdstylerto create the DVD which of course fits the video on DVD but I'm losing quality. For a start, most AVI containers do not support a valid DAR. It is my understanding that the tech spec of converting from an analog signal (VHS) to a digital format is limited to a horizontal definition of 720 pixels. PAL supports a vertical definition of 576 pixels. So the maximum spec for most capture software is 720*576.
9 mar 2006 · The VHS capture had full vertical resolution compared with the original. And if you think about it, VHS can be interlaced so you will need the full vertical resolution to keep the interlacing. But if you are going to use 2 mbit/s then 352x288 may look better because this bitrate may not be enough with 352x576 resolution from a VHS source.
