History. UWM's predecessor institutions (Milwaukee Normal School, Milwaukee State Teachers College and Milwaukee State College) have competed in basketball since the 19th century as the Milwaukee Normals (1896–1927) and Milwaukee State Green Gulls (1927–1956).

15 wrz 2021 · UWM Basketball Timeline. 1895: The first men’s basketball team is established at the Milwaukee Normal School. No record of the Normals' first season remains, but they dominate the next two seasons, playing exclusively against city high schools and local YMCAs.
15 wrz 2021 · The history of college men’s basketball at UWM began over a century ago. Back in 1895, the Milwaukee Normal School teams played their first games under the nickname “Normals.” At the time, players were split by age and their opponents could include faculty, alumni and high school teams.
Milwaukee’s first professional basketball team was formed in 1921. Named after the city’s promotional slogan —“Milwaukee – A Bright Spot”— the team was called the Bright Spots and played at the downtown Milwaukee Auditorium (now the Milwaukee Theatre).
