USS Harry E. Yarnell (DLG/CG-17) was a Leahy-class guided missile cruiser of the United States Navy. Named in honor of Admiral Harry E. Yarnell, she was originally classified as a "destroyer leader" or frigate, in 1975 she was redesignated a cruiser in the Navy's ship reclassification.

Such was the case on 23 October 1973 as I stood on the bridge wing of the destroyer leader USS Harry E. Yarnell (DLG-17), fumbling with the chin strap of a gray helmet marked with the letters “JOOD.”
USS HARRY E. YARNELL was the second LEAHY-class guided missile cruiser. Reclassified as a guided missile cruiser on June 30, 1975, HARRY E. YARNELL was decommissioned and stricken from the Navy Register on October 29, 1993.

Operations in the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean brought the fine ship and her crew to a high degree of readiness before she sailed for her 3d Med deployment early in 1967.
