The Tribe of Dan (Hebrew: דָּן, "Judge") was one of the twelve tribes of Israel, according to the Torah. According to the Hebrew Bible, the tribe initially settled in the hill lands bordering Judah and the Philistines but migrated north due to pressure of their enemies, settling at Laish (later known as Dan), near Mount Hermon. Dan, one of the 12 tribes of Israel that in biblical times comprised the people of Israel who later became the Jewish people. The tribe was named after the first of two sons born to Jacob (also called Israel) and Bilhah, the maidservant of Jacob’s second wife, Rachel. Nine of the other 11 tribes.
The tribe of Dan, thus, did judge over Israel as one of its own tribes. They became a cultic center of worship, the symbol of the northern kingdom's religious deviance. Other Israelite kings, such as Ahab, strengthened Dan's idolatrous stance.

The tribe of Dan is the Judges that was prophesied by Jacob in Genesis 49:16, also in Isaiah 1:26 YAHWEH promises to restore the judges first as in the days of old or the beginning. Remember Dan is referred to has the one who will administer justice or judge.
Originally inhabited by Canaanites, it was captured by a part of the tribe of Dan, whose territory in southwestern Palestine was invaded by the Philistines (Josh. xix. 47; Judges xviii. 1 et seq.), and who named it after their tribal ancestor (Josh. xix. 47).
