Compared to the predominant reactor fuel, uranium dioxide (UO 2), thorium dioxide (ThO 2) has a higher melting point, higher thermal conductivity, and lower coefficient of thermal expansion. In particular, the thermal conductivity is important since it leads to a lower fuel pellets temperature.
A thorium fuel cycle can offer several potential advantages over a uranium fuel cycle [Note 1] —including the much greater abundance of thorium found on Earth, superior physical and nuclear fuel properties, and reduced nuclear waste production. One advantage of thorium fuel is its low weaponization potential.
