The stuffing box is a packing assembly or a shaft seal that is used as a sealing device to prevent leakages of air or water or steam from rotating or sliding shaft. They are mostly used in the pump to prevent fluid leakage.
The stuffing box is an annular space around the stem where packing rings are inserted for stem sealing. The stuffing box may contain one or more lantern rings, which are hollow rings placed between packing rings for different purposes, such as cooling the packing rings by separating them.
With a more thorough understanding of the interrelation of stuffing box pressures, rubbing speeds, and leakage temperatures, improved water-cooled stuffing boxes have been built for temperatures up to 200°C (400°F), and stuffing box pressures up to 35 bar (500 psig), without pressure-reducing breakdowns or labyrinths.
Selection Criteria. There are three major criteria to packing selection: pH level of the fluid being pumped, fluid temperature, and shaft speed. Why these three? Packing is designed to expand radially against the shaft and stufing box to create a compression seal that will control prod-uct leakage and prevent the loss of valuable process fluids.
