Awesomemod should be installed in Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3/Mods/Packages, just like other CC. The old method can still work, for sure, but it's unreliable, and creates problems with various script mods - so it's better to do things the normal way.
Awesome mod plus its optional config file go into Mods\Packages in the user TS3 game folder in Documents like any other mod despite what the great and powerful Pes says. It is possible that Awesome will still work either way, although the Program File method is much more complicated.
