The SI unit of volume is the cubic metre, symbol m 3. The litre, symbol L or l, is the special name for the cubic decimetre, symbol dm 3. 1 litre is equal to one thousandth of a cubic metre. It follows that 1 millilitre, symbol mL or ml, is equal to 1 cubic centimetre.
