The Romans were prolific writers and produced many works that have stood the test of time, providing us with valuable insights into their beliefs, values, and way of life.
Gothic (12th to 16th centuries), which included different styles that depended on the region or country it was associated with (Textura, Cursive Anglicana, Litera Hybrida, etc.); Humanist (from around 1400 onward), which helped develop modern European handwriting.
The Roman scribes tended to slant these letters, particularly with the increased use of papyrus, in order to cope better with the grooved structure of their writing surface. Cursive letters also enabled a faster writing pace, especially when combined with the universally popular ligatures.
