The gear ratio calculator uses 2 combinations of gears to output an overall drive ratio. The first set is the main gear set which is generally starting at the motor or nitro engine. The next gear ratio is an internal transmission ratio or most commonly a differential gear ratio.
Your RC Car manual may provide recommendations on gear ratios. A higher turn motor (13.5t, 17.5t etc) will have more torque but less top speed or RPM. Therefore, a higher turn motor will need a larger pinion / smaller spur gear combination to make use of all this low end torque.
