Robert Browning (7 May 1812 – 12 December 1889) was an English poet and playwright whose dramatic monologues put him high among the Victorian poets. He was noted for irony , characterization , dark humour , social commentary , historical settings and challenging vocabulary and syntax .
The publication of his long narrative poem, The Ring and the Book, finally brought him popular success. Browning died in 1889 and is buried in Poets’ Corner in Westminster Abbey. Made in 1889, the recording of 'How They Brought The Good News from Aix to Ghent' is the oldest in the Archive.
