Mercury's magnetic field is approximately a magnetic dipole, apparently global, [8] on the planet of Mercury. [9] Data from Mariner 10 led to its discovery in 1974; the spacecraft measured the field's strength as 1.1% that of Earth's magnetic field. [10]
14 sty 2019 · The discovery of Mercury’s unusually axisymmetric, anomalously axially offset dipolar magnetic field reveals a new regime of planetary magnetic fields. The cause of the offset dipole...
7 maj 2015 · From orbital vector magnetic field measurements of Mercury taken by the MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging (MESSENGER) spacecraft at altitudes below 150 kilometers, we have detected remanent magnetization in Mercury’s crust.
16 paź 2017 · Though Mercury's magnetic field at the surface has just 1% the strength of Earth's, it interacts with the magnetic field of the solar wind to sometimes create intense magnetic tornadoes that funnel the fast, hot solar wind plasma down to the surface of the planet.
30 wrz 2011 · On 18 March 2011, the MESSENGER spacecraft was inserted into a near-polar orbit about Mercury with a periapsis altitude of 200 km, an inclination of 82.5°, and an apoapsis altitude of 15,300 km. Here, we show that magnetic field observations from orbit provide an unambiguous determination of the global structure of the planetary magnetic field.
1 cze 2015 · Of the four inner rocky planets, only Mercury and Earth have a global magnetic field generated by a fluid metallic core. The image shows magnetometer measurements during three orbits at different altitudes.
22 maj 2014 · MESSENGER mapped the elemental and chemical composition of the surface of Mercury, imaged the global surface to determine the structure of the planet’s magnetic field, measured the libration amplitude and gravitational field structure, determined the composition of radar-reflective materials at the poles, and characterized exosphere neutrals ...
