The Western Ratsnake is the most common snake species in Texas. It represents an agile non-venomous species. Western Ratsnakes are known for their innate ability to climb trees. They can climb a tree on the tree trunk without the aid of branches. These snakes are also good swimmers.

The western mud snake is a large species (typically 40 to 54 inches in length) recognized by its glossy, black scales and bright red or pink underside.
The Checkered Gartersnake is most commonly found in western Texas in desert and grassland habitats. Look for them near water sources, such as rivers, lakes, wetlands, cattle tanks, canals, and ditches. Living in arid conditions, these garter snakes are incredibly good at finding water sources.
27 wrz 2024 · One of the most commonly encountered types of snakes in Texas is the Western Rat Snake. These non-venomous snakes can grow up to six feet long and are often mistaken for the venomous Western Diamondback Rattlesnake due to their similar coloration.
Banded Rock rattlesnake (C.l. klauberi) Similar to the mottled rock rattlesnake, but darker greenish-gray in color. Found only in the extreme western tip of Texas. Blacktail rattlesnake (Crotalus molossus) is gray to olive green with dark blotches along the back and a black tail.
Everywhere you look in Texas, there’s a bunch of snakes, including about one dozen venomous snakes from all four venomous snake categories, coral snakes, copperheads, cotton mouths and rattlesnakes.
