A mechanical pencil or clutch pencil is a pencil with a replaceable and mechanically extendable solid pigment core called a "lead" / ˈ l ɛ d /. The lead , often made of graphite , is not bonded to the outer casing, and the user can mechanically extend it as its point is worn away from use.

2 kwi 2024 · The primary components of a mechanical pencil include the barrel, the lead reservoir, the clutch or chuck, the eraser, and the lead itself. The barrel is the main body of the pencil and houses the other components. The lead reservoir, also known as the lead magazine, is where the spare leads are stored.
For the most part, mechanical pencils are quite simple to use - with most of them, you just click the button on the end to feed out more lead whenever you need to. Retract the lead by holding the button in and gently pushing the lead in.
