Tennoji Zoo was opened in 1915 as the third zoo in Japan and has been cherished by Osaka City citizens as a place of recreation and education. Since its opening, the zoo has been continuously growing and now keeps approximately 1,500 animals of 300 species on the premises of 11 hectares (27 acres).
Osaka Municipal Tennoji Zoological Garden keeps animals of about 200 species, including lesser pandas and polar bears. The zoological garden aims at 'ecological exhibitions' that demonstrate how animals and nature are interrelated, by recreating actual habitats of animals.
