Oak wilt survives as spores in fungal mats that form under the bark of an infected tree, in the fall or spring following the death of that tree. As a tree in the red oak group begins to die, the oak wilt fungus produces fungal mats between the sapwood and bark of the trunk or large branches of a tree.
Symptoms of acute oak decline are essentially the tree's response to stress. They are a thinning crown as leaves are lost, cracks in the bark, and dark bleeds that may run down the trunk.
