If the TSH level is low and the FT4 result is high this suggests an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) that requires treatment. If the TSH level is slightly raised but the FT4 level is still within the normal reference range this is called subclinical hypothyroidism or mild thyroid failure.

5 wrz 2023 · Tests measuring free T4 – either a free T4 (FT4) or free T4 index (FTI) – more accurately reflect how the thyroid gland is functioning when checked with a TSH. The finding of an elevated TSH and low FT4 or FTI indicates primary hypothyroidism due to disease in the thyroid gland.
• A low TSH level with a high FT4 level and a high FT3 level indicates hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) • Abnormal TSH levels together with normal FT4 levels indicate you may be at risk of developing a thyroid disorder (subclinical thyroid disease)
The normal range for the free T index is 4.8 to 12.7 mcg/dL. If your results show high total T4 or a high free T4 index, it means you may have hyperthyroidism. If your results show low total T4 or a low free T4 index, it means you may have hypothyroidism.
