History. [edit] Martin County was formed in 1870, and named for congressman John Preston Martin. The county seat was initially located in Warfield, but was moved to Inez due to its more central location in the county. The county has long been reliant on the coal industry.
Martin was born on October 11, 1811 near Jonesville. Martin served in the State House of Representatives from 1841 through 1843. Martin also served in the 29 th United States Congress, the Kentucky State Senate and was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention.

Located in extreme Eastern KY, Martin County rests on the banks of the Tug River, which borders West Virginia. Beautiful, wild and nearly inaccessible in it's youth, the area became a new county September 1, 1870, formed out of the four surrounding counties of Lawrence, Floyd, Johnson and Pike.
