Mardi Gras celebrations begin two and a half weeks before Fat Tuesday and the Port City comes to life. Elaborate themed floats manned by masked mystic societies, mounted police and marching bands wind through downtown Mobile and surrounding areas, entertaining nearly a million revelers each year.
For many of the Mardi Gras parades in Mobile, members of societies on floats toss gifts to the general public, known as throws, that include plastic beads, moonpies, doubloon coins, decorated plastic cups, candy, wrapped cakes/snacks, stuffed animals, and small toys, footballs, frisbees, or whistles.
This is the earliest, most complete, Mardi Gras parade schedule anywhere, so it's not yet completely correct. But we can guarantee that at least 90 percent of this schedule will look the same by the time Mardi Gras gets here.
Today, there are over 80 mystic societies in Mobile, with more than 38 of them parading during the 2 ½ weeks leading up to Mardi Gras Day. Over a million folks flock to downtown to experience carnival. In addition to parades, most societies celebrate in grand style with formal balls and abundant food and libations.
