9 wrz 2004 · Lumpkin County was established by the state legislature in 1832 and named after Georgia governor Wilson Lumpkin, who also served as a U.S. congressman and senator. Lumpkin County and its seat, Dahlonega, are famous as the site of the country’s first major gold rush, which began in 1828.
