History of July. The old Roman calendar started in March. The fifth month was called mens quintilis. In the year 154 BCE, a rebellion forced the Roman senate to change the beginning of the civil year from March to January 1. With this reform, Quintilis officially became the seventh month but kept its name (for the next 110 years).
